2008 Midsummer Magic Gala was a tremendous success. Guests enjoyed a picture perfect evening under the stars at Mission Hill Family Estate. Musical entertainment, which included members of the Okanagan Symphony, ranged from a trumpet fanfare, to Kelowna's own Taiko Drummers. Pianist Ian Parker mesmerized guests with his superb performance and former Okanagan Symphony soloist, Soprano Catherine Kingdon was equally entertaining as she sang for a very appreciative audience.
Auction item highlights included a beautiful painting donated by Artist Robert Genn and the Hambleton Gallery. Wine lots featuring a case of 2007 Chateau Chasse-Spleen wine futures and a Vertical of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Chateau Beaucastel, 1995 - 2000, were extremely popular. The experience package featuring Cycling with former Olympian and Tour de France rider, Axel Merckx followed by a terrace reception at Cedar Creek Estate Winery was hotly contested.
By all accounts the event was a tremendous success, generating a profit in excess of $80,000.00. The money raised has a direct impact on the Okanagan Symphony and its ability to provide the Okanagan Valley with the finest in musical experiences, to enhance our community’s cultural life and to reach out to our local youth with ambitious outreach and education programs.
Planning for success: The Gala committee has many dedicated and qualified individuals, all volunteer. They have taken on the responsibility of organizing the Midsummer Magic Event. As a result, the OSO receives the direct financial benefit the gala event generates.

WINE FUTURES: ONE CASE OF CHATEAU CHASS-SPLEENE MOULIS EN MEDOC 2007
Take home tonight: one bottle of 1993

Chateau Chasse-Speen Moulis en Medoc 1993 In 1821, Lord Byron enjoyed his stay at the Chateau so much that he declared it chased away spleen, ie ill temper or low-spirits. The estate commands 133 acres in Moulis, close to Margaux, planted to 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40%, Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot. Traditionally fermented in concrete cuves and matured 22-24 months in 50% new French oak. Fined with egg whites and bottled unfiltered. Considered one of the finest Cru Bourgeois estates. Consistent quality is a hallmark of this Chateau. Only 2300 cases of the 1993 were produced. Enjoyable now.The Futures case of the Chasse Spleen is still maturing in cask for release in 2009.
This vintage scored 88/100 by the Wine Spectator…blackberry and chocolate notes, medium bodied, soft acidity, and round developed medium tannins and finish…for near term cellaring. An excellent opportunity to acquire a sealed case of classic Bordeaux. Enjoy slowly over the next decade. Patience is a virtue!
