2009 Midsummer Magic Music and Wine Gala was all that we could have hoped for. Once again guests enjoyed a picture perfect evening at Mission Hill Family Estate. Guests were welcomed at the keystone by Piper, Brad Beger. The remainder of the music throughout the evening featured the Strings. International Cellist Arnold Choi was accompanied by members of the OSO and members of the Okanagan Youth Orchestra for some incredible entertainment. For the Grand Finale guests were treated to a full performance of Villa Lobos as they were leaving the grounds.
Auction item highlights included a phenomenal sculpted steel torso donated by Artist Cory Fuhr. Epicurean Dinners, one donated by Chef Ned Bell and Cedar Creek Winery, another by Chef Bernard Casavant and Chef Rod Butters with wine provided by George Galbraith. Chef Filatow and Howard Soon partnered up to provide another glorious evening of food and wine.
Special wine lots included a case of 1995 Bordeaux Chateau Cantemerle Grand Cru and Wine Futures For One Case Of 2008 Chateau La Grave A Pomerol. McDavid McCallan - SPECIAL EDITION SCOTCH , a Double Magnum of Nota Bene signed by Winery Principal Jason Priestly were also very popular items. There were many more fabulous wine lots from Okanagan Wineries and private cellars featured, too numerous to mention. OSO Maestro Rosemary Thomson offered a package which included conducting lessons, your own personal baton and an opportunity to conduct at the April 2010 concert – another incredible opportunity.
The event was a tremendous success, generating a profit in excess of $70,000.00. The money raised has a direct impact on the Okanagan Symphony and its ability to provide the Okanagan Valley with the finest in musical experiences, to enhance our community’s cultural life and to reach out to our local youth with ambitious outreach and education programs.

WINE FUTURES: ONE CASE OF CHATEAU LA GRAVE A POMEROL 2008
Take home tonight: one bottle of Chateau La Grave à Pomerol 1998

La Grave à Pomerol is another of the relatively obscure Pomerol estates that are now making better and better wine. Since 1971 the château has been owned by the meticulous and introspective Christian Moueix, who directs the business affairs of his firm in Libourne.
La Grave à Pomerol 1998 - Still deep ruby colour, with pronounced developing aromas of crushed berries, coffee, and spicy vanilla oak, tobacco leaf and pepper. The vintage is full bodied, medium acidity, ripe fine grained firm tannins. Enjoyable now, the tannin structure will allow further cellaring through 2015. This Merlot blend is of exceptional quality, rated 90-95 points.
A superb vintage for the right bank! $100.00/bottle
The 2008 futures are highly regarded. The Chateau received accolades by Robert Parker 88-90/100 as a solid buy, while MW Jancis Robinson rating was 17/20

HARP SCULPTED OF STEEL CREATED BY CORY FUHR
51½” x 18” x 18”

Cory Fuhr is talented metal sculptor living in Vernon, British Columbia. Self-schooled and trained, Cory sculpts exclusively in steel. His process includes arc-welding, manual cold manipulation and thermal folding.
"Anthropomorphic transformations have fascinated and inspired my work through my life. The fusion of the inanimate - cold metals - and the animated - our bodies and pastoral surroundings, drives my creative process.
By deconstructing those classicist notions that demand the separation of this mortal coil and the abstract, I strive to bring romance and breath to metal. The conflict of engineered forms and untouched landscapes challenges humanity to reconcile our organic form with the monstrous artifice of our creations. Through my work, I explore a possibility of acceptance, or reconciliation."

The evening must be hosted in the Kelowna area and dinner to be arranged and completed prior to November 30, 2009.

Chef Casavant: Inducted into the BC Restaurant Hall of Fame 2008
His current food philosophy still reflects this. "Keep it simple, feel the food. Treat people how you would like to be treated, be humble, as after all, it is all about good food, good techniques, and good if not great staff." Chef Bernard believes strongly in working with local farmers and producers to bring the freshest food to his guests. His long term working relationships with local and International suppliers ensure a world class dining experience for all his guests.
Chef Butters: Inducted into the BC Restaurant Hall of Fame 2007
Chef Butters has shared the kitchen with such admired chefs as Kerry Sear at Four Seasons and Bernard Casavant of Château Whistler, whose similar philosophies of using local farm-fresh products and their own home-grown herbs and vegetables influenced him greatly. Rod then went on to open the world famous Wickaninnish Inn, Tofino as Chef de Cuisine in 1996. Fresco in Kelowna followed in the early 2000’s. In March of 2009, he started another successful venture, RauDZ Regional Table.
Terry David Mulligan: TV, Film and Broadcast personality.
Most recent success is The Tasting Room: “During the show, I take the daily conversations between chefs, sommeliers, wine growers/owners/makers, writers, artisans and throw in the occasional celebrity and see how the mix works. The Tasting Room is the radio version of an audio blend, a Meritage for the soul.”
