2011 Midsummer Magic Music and Wine Gala was a very exciting event in a number of different ways. This year the theme for the evening was Black and White and our guests were ready to go, beautifully attired in Black & White and various shades in between. For the first time in six years at the Mission Hill venue, we had inclement weather. Traditionally the event has taken place under the stars and in a tent. With creative thinking and incredibly hard work by both staff and volunteers the opening and closing receptions were moved indoors. We were in close quarters but all seemed to manage well and enjoy the entertainment and refreshments provided.
The last major planned change for this year’s event was moving the food portion of the evening. There were multiple tasting stations set up for guests in the Mission Hill Barrel Cellar. The mood was set with candlelight and music. Once again Winery Chef Matthew Batey wowed the guests with a beautifully prepared menu. All of the food selections were paired with the perfect wines. Kudos as well to the ever attentive service staff.
Our musical program was highlighted by a variety of offerings. Brass, Jazz, Strings, Opera and Piano. Several members of the Okanagan Symphony performed throughout the evening at various locations. Special guest artists pianist Ian Parker, soprano Melina Moore and tenor Isaiah Bell entertained the guests with a number of show stoppers. The guests themselves performed in the Barrel Cellar accompanying the musicians in a shortened version of Bolero. A little jazz and dancing closed out the evening with coffee and dessert.
Auction highlights: A large selection of rare collector wines brought a great deal of interest this year. Many of these rare collectibles were donated by Tom Budd from his private wine cellar. Epicurean Dinners, one donated by Chef Michael Lyon and Wine Maker Howard Soon from Sandhill Wines. Another by Chef Bernard Casavant with wine provided by George Galbraith. Chef Stuart Klassen and the Delta Grand Okanagan featured a Chef’s Demonstration and Dinner in the kitchen of the Grand Hotel. Watermark Resort in Osoyoos donated a prize package for 2 to experience the best of what the Okanagan has to offer, from specially chosen wineries and restaurants to locally grown produce, locally produced cheeses and breads as well as a cooking demonstration and dinner. The package also included visiting local points of interest such as the Desert Centre and Nk’MIp Cultural Centre. One lucky person will have the opportunity to either play or conduct the OSO, under the private tutelage of OSO Conductor, Rosemary Thomson. Our Title sponsor TD also provided a Wayne Gretsky autographed hockey jersey for auction. Some grand items indeed, many more too numerous to mention.
In addition to the rare wine lots we had over 50 separate Okanagan Winery and Spirits lots, many including rare Gold Medal Winning wines and large format bottles.
The Reverse Draw had a repeat performance this year. Twelve incredible prizes went to twelve very excited winners. The Grand prize once again was a 5 ounce Gold Bar – courtesy of Graham Burns, TD Waterhouse – Private Client Services.
The event was a success, generating a net profit in excess of $71,000.00. These funds will help support the musicians, programming and operations of the symphony. The Okanagan Symphony Orchestra plays an important role in enhancing the cultural vibrancy of our community. It assists in supporting the economic sustainability of the Okanagan so all our residents and visitors alike can benefit.
We would like to extend a very special thank you to all of those who supported the 2011 OSO Midsummer Magic Gala, we are ever grateful.

Isaiah Bell
* This is an honest production grappling with a complex and enigmatic work.
* … confident playing from flute, horn and percussion made Britten’s detailed, difficult score shine out with all the pathos and power latent in this remarkable fusion of East and West.
* Tenor Isaiah Bell is up to almost everything Britten throws at him in the pivotal role of the Madwoman, from stark passages with only a glimpse of instrumental support to extravagant descants floating over complex ensemble numbers that mark critical points in the often austere score. – David Gordon Duke, The Vancouver Sun
